Primary and Secondary Schools

Following, in alphabetical order, is a list of schools started by the Sisters of Charity. Each school listing includes start date, full name and location.

All Saints’ Primary School and High School, Bombala, NSW

Sisters of Charity taught in All Saints’ Primary School and All Saints’ High School from 1885 to 1888 and then the Sisters of St Joseph’s ran the school.

Bethlehem College, Ashfield, NSW

Opened in 1881 it was the first girls’ high school in the inner west.. Renamed St Vincent’s College in 2023.

Catholic Ladies College, East Melbourne then Eltham, VIC

Commenced as St Patrick's Girls High School, providing secondary and commercial classes from 1897. In 1902 was renamed the Catholic Ladies College.

Catholic Ladies College, East Melbourne, VIC

Started by the Sisters of Charity in 1902 in East Melbourne, continues today under the administration of Mary Aikenhead Ministries at Eltham, where it relocated in 1971.

Christ the King Regional Girls College, Braybrook, VIC

Opened in 1987, the school amalgamated into Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in 1997. The Sisters of Charity provided a principal from 1987 to 1992.

Corpus Christi Primary School, Glenroy, VIC

Sisters of Charity staffed and ran the school from 1956 to 1980. The school continues today.

Holy Innocents’ Catholic Primary School, Croydon, NSW

From opening in 1925, Sisters of Charity provided teaching staff at different times. The school was transferred to the Presentation Sisters and continues today.

Holy Trinity Primary School, Curtin, ACT

The Sisters of Charity provided teaching staff and principal from 1966 to 1988. The school continues today. Sisters also taught at Catholic Girls’ High School, later named St Clare’s College.

Marion Primary School, Horsley Park, NSW

The Sisters of Charity taught at the school and provided a school principal from 1982 to 1987. The school continues today.

Mater Dei Primary School, St John's Wood, QLD

Run by the Sisters of Charity from 1951 to 1984. The school continues today.

Monte Oliveto College, Edgecliff, NSW

First classes run by the Sisters of Charity from 1880. A combined primary and secondary school opened in 1912.

Mt Carmel Primary School, Sandy Bay, TAS

Opened in 1942, became part of Mt Carmel College in 1957. The first lay principal appointed in the 1970s. Sisters of Charity continued to be involved in the school.

Mt Carmel Secondary College, Sandy Bay, TAS

Opened in 1957, the first lay principal appointed in 1998. Sisters continued to be involved with the school. The college continues today.

Mt St Mary's College, Katoomba, NSW

A primary, secondary and boarding school run by the Sisters of Charity from 1901 to 1974, when it closed.

Mt St Michael’s College, Ashgrove, QLD

Sisters of Charity ran St Finbarr’s Primary School from 1925. A secondary college started in 1928 called St Finbarr’s Secondary College which was later renamed Mt St Michael’s College.

Mt St Patrick's High School, Paddington, NSW

Sisters of Charity ran the school from 1903 to 1962, when it closed.

Nazareth Catholic Primary School, Blackbutt, NSW

Sisters of Charity taught at Nazareth Catholic Primary School in 2000.

Nazaretto College, Bega, NSW

Senior girls’ boarding school run by the Sisters of Charity from 1884 to 1926. Continued to 1975.

Notre Dame Primary School, Coorparoo, QLD

Staffed and run by the Sisters of Charity from 1955 to 1966.

Our Lady of Help of Christians Primary School, Eltham, VIC

School established by the Sisters of Charity in 1971. The last Sister of Charity Principal was in 1989.

Our Lady of Mt Carmel Primary School, Mt Pritchard, NSW

First classes started by two Sisters of Charity in 1952. The last Sisters of Charity school principal finished in 2006. The school continues today including with involvement from the Sisters of Charity.

Sacred Heart Primary School, Cabramatta, NSW

Started in 1935 and staffed by the Sisters of Charity, who had a presence in the school until 2012. The school continues today.

Sacred Heart Primary School, Darlinghurst, NSW

Opened in 1883, the students moved to St Francis School, Paddington and it closed 1983.

Sacred Heart Primary School, Diamond Creek, VIC

The school opened in 1962 and the Sisters of Charity provided teaching staff and a school principal from 1971 to 1984. The school continues today.

Sancta Sophia College, Glenroy, VIC

The Sisters of Charity provided staff and principal from 1967 to 1995. Amalgamated to form Penola Catholic College in 1995, which continues today.

Stella Maris Primary School, Shellharbour, NSW

Started and run by the Sisters of Charity from 1958 to 2009. The school continues today.

St Aloysius Catholic College, Kingston Beach, TAS

Started by the Sisters of Charity as a primary school in 1960. The first lay principal appointed in 2001 and the school continues today as a K to 10 school.

St Ambrose's Primary School, Concord West, NSW

Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1924, last sister as school principal in 1978. School continues today.

St Anne's Orphanage School, Liverpool, NSW

From 1888 to 1957 Sisters of Charity provided primary school education with secondary school girls attending St Mary’s Girls’ School, Liverpool.

St Brendan's Primary School, Flemington, VIC

Sisters of Charity started the school in 1898. Administered by the Sisters of Mercy from 1909 and continues today under lay leadership.

St Brigid's Catholic School, New Norfolk, TAS

Started as a primary school in 1925 and expanded into secondary classes for girls. Presentation Sisters took over in 1950. School continues today with lay leadership.

St Canice's Primary School, Elizabeth Bay, NSW

Started by the Sisters of Charity in 1883. The first lay principal was in 1969.

St Canice's Primary School, Katoomba, NSW

School started by the Sisters of Charity in 1901. Continues today under lay leadership.

St Charles Borromeo Community School, Lower Templestowe, VIC

Sisters of Charity work at this school from 1983 to 1985. The school continues today.

St Christopher's Primary School, Airport West, VIC

Opened by the Sisters of Charity in 1961. The first lay principal was appointed in 1988. The school continues today.

St Columba's College, Essendon, VIC

From 1897, provided secondary girls’ education particularly for the girls from St Monica’s Primary School.

St Columbkille's Primary School, Woolloomooloo, NSW

Primary school attached to St Columbkille’s Catholic Church from 1886. (No record of duration of school available.)

St Declan's Catholic Primary School, Penshurst, NSW

Started by two Sisters of Charity in 1907. Then continued by the Sisters of St Josephs from 1914 and continues today.

St Francis de Sales Primary School, Oak Park, VIC

Commenced in 1961.

St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School, Paddington, NSW

Started in 1883 by the Sisters of Charity. Continues today as a regional catholic primary school.

St Francis Xavier's Primary School, South Hobart, TAS

Started in 1965, the last sister as principal in 1973.

St Gabriel's Primary School, Bexley, NSW

Started and run by the Sisters of Charity from 1939 to 1946, from which date the Sisters of St Josephs worked in the school. The school continues today. 

St George's Primary School, Carlton, VIC

Started by the Sisters of Charity in 1897, the school was administered by the Sisters of Mercy from 1971. School closed in 2000.

St John Bosco’s Primary School, East Keilor, VIC

Commenced in 1955.

St John's Catholic Primary School, Auburn, NSW

First classes taught by the Sisters in the grounds of St Joseph’s Hospital in 1892. Continues today.

St John’s Girls High School, Auburn

Started in 1893 soon after St Joseph's Hospital relocated to Auburn. Secondary classes for girls were added from the early 1940s. From 1964 this secondary section was known as St John's Regional Girls' High School. This high school closed in 1995 and the primary school continues to this day.

St John's Primary School, East Melbourne, VIC

Run by the Sisters of Charity from opening in 1890 to 1989.

St John the Baptist School, Clifton Hill, VIC

Both primary and secondary classes taught from 1894. Continues today as a primary school.

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Collingwood, VIC

Started by the Sisters of Charity in 1891. The school continues today under lay leadership.

St Joseph's Orphanage School, Hobart, Tasmania

Run by the Sisters of Charity from 1879 to 1957 when all children transferred to other schools.

St Joseph's Primary School, Edgecliff, NSW

Sisters of Charity invited by the parish priest to teach in 1879.

St Joseph's Primary School, Hobart, Tasmania

Opened by the Sisters of Charity in 1847, it added secondary classes to become St Joseph’s College before the school became part of Mt Carmel Secondary College in 1957, which continues to operate today.

St Joseph's Primary School, Rockdale, NSW

Sisters of Charity ran the school from 1892 to 1912 when the Sisters of St Josephs assumed responsibility. School continues today under lay leadership.

St Joseph the Worker Catholic Primary School, South Auburn, NSW

School opened in 1964. The Sisters of Charity provided a principal from 1964 to 1987, remaining a presence in the school until 1999. The school continues today.

St Leo the Great Primary School, Altona North, VIC

School opened in 1968 and the Sisters of Charity provided teachers and principal from 1974 to 1978.

St Luke's Ragged School, South Hobart, Tasmania

Provided free education to poor and neglected children. Opened on Angelsea Street in 1869.

St Mary's Cathedral Commercial College, Sydney, NSW

Sisters of Charity involved with the school from 1926 to 1979 teaching girls in primary and secondary classes. The school moved to Paddington in 1964.

St Mary's Catholic College, Kingaroy, QLD

Started by the Sisters of Charity in 1929 and later continued by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan from 1934.

St Mary's Primary School, Concord, NSW

Opened in 1883, over the years primary, secondary and commercial classes taught.

St Mary's Girls High School, Liverpool, NSW

Opened and run by the os of Charity from 1879. Merged in 2016 and is now the co-educational All Saint’s Catholic College. St Mary’s Primary School, Liverpool opened in 1882 and in 1920 amalgamated with the high school, before becoming separate again in 1950.

St Mary's Star of the Sea, Hurstville, NSW

Opened in 1895 by the Sisters of Charity as St Michael’s Primary School and amalgamated with St Mary’s Star of the Sea in the 1920s. Since 1993, part of Bethany College, Hurstville.

St Monica's Girls Primary School, Moonee Ponds, VIC

First started classes in 1896. Continues today as a co-educational catholic primary school.

St Patrick's Primary School, Bega, NSW

Opened in 1884, the school continues to operate today.

St Patrick's Primary School, Fitzroy, VIC

Opened in 1889 by the Sisters of Charity and became St Patrick’s Cathedral Convent School in 1897.

St Patrick's Primary School, Kogarah, NSW

Opened in 1886 by the Sisters of Charity, and managed by the Sisters of St Joseph from 1910. The school continues today under lay leadership.

St Patrick's Primary School, Mortlake, NSW

School initially started in 1895 then closed due to declining enrolments in 1956. The school re-opened in 2017.

St Peter's Chanel Catholic Primary School, The Gap, QLD

Teaching staff provided by the Sisters of Charity from 1951 to 1963, and 1972 to 1981. The school continues today.

St Peter's Primary School, East Keilor, VIC

The school had a Sister of Charity principal from 1971 to 1985. The school continues today.

St Philomena's Scholarship School, Essendon, VIC

A dedicated school to assist students to study for scholarships at government schools from 1939 to 1964.

St Raphael's Primary School, South Hurstville, NSW

Started by the Sisters of Charity in 1929 and staffed to 1974.

St Therese's Primary School, Essendon, VIC

Opened by the Sisters of Charity in 1923 with 30 students, the school continues today.

St Thomas Becket Primary School, Lewisham, NSW

Opened in 1883 by the Sisters of Charity. First lay principal in 1996.

St Thomas' Girls’ High School, Lewisham, NSW

From 1913, at different times taught both primary and secondary classes. In the late 1950s, it became solely a primary school.

St Thomas More's Primary School, Brighton Le Sands, NSW

Started and run by the Sisters of Charity from 1939 to 1985. The school continues today.

St Vincent's Primary School, Ashfield, NSW

Opened in 1882 as St Charles Primary School and renamed St Vincent’s in 1904, amalgamated with Bethlehem College in the early 1950s.

St Vincent's College High School, Potts Point, NSW

Opened in 1871, it became St Vincent’s College in 1882. The well-known girls’ school is now part of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.

St Vincent's Primary School, Potts Point, NSW

Opened in 1858, it merged with St Vincent’s High School in 1882 to become St Vincent’s College Potts Point.

St Vincent de Paul's Primary School, Strathmore, VIC

Sisters of Charity opened the school in 1937 and ran it until 1987. The school continues today.
